About the Teachers

Chanda Ross Clements

Why yoga?

Yoga for me has been a beautiful journey of not just increased health but also a deeper knowledge of who I am.  With this knowledge, my ability to navigate in life and all of its beautiful twists and turns has developed with more understanding and compassion. Yoga is more than a practice, for me it is my lifestyle.

What is my favorite characteristic about me?

I'm a mother of 3 beautiful kids, and I am an identical twin...I'm a caregiver!

If I weren't here, where would I be?

This is a hard one...oh the places I'd go! Tuscany😊

What I'd like to most convey in my yoga classes?

I'd like for practitioners to feel they've gone on a beautiful journey, like a mini self vacation. Transformed for the moment into such presence they come out feeling renewed.

Credentials:

I've completed two 200 hour teacher trainings through Adventure club at Rubber Soul, 2012 then 2014... that's how much I loved it! I'm beginning a Therapeutic yoga teacher training this fall! Working towards my 500 hour mark, woohoo!

Why yoga?

Initially it was to lengthen, strengthen, and prevent injuries in my body as I served in the military. Now, it’s to help myself and others enjoy any or all of the 9 fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). Specifically, I’m working on spreading AUDACIOUS KINDNESS!

What's your favorite characteristic about yourself?

I’m an ENCOURAGER!

If you weren't here, where would you be?

Easy…The Breakwater Cottage—our family’s restored cottage that is walking distance from Lake Michigan’s Breakwater Lighthouse in Manitowoc, WI.

What is it you most want to share in your class?

A worthy and intentional hatha timeout from everything to discover our many connections and abilities, and to be thankful in the present moment.

Credentials.

I’ve completed my 200hr YTT, numerous Yin Workshops (7.5hrs resident & 5hr DVD) and completed my 500hr YTT certification through the Himalayan Institute . Additionally, I am Group Fitness Instructor, Indoor Cycle Instructor, and First Aid/CPR/AED qualified.

Why yoga?

I find it useful, and realize that others might find it useful.  I practice yoga mainly for the mental benefits.  I have learned that my physical health is directly affected by my mental stress.  The more I can keep my mental stress levels low the healthier and happier my physical being is.

What's your favorite characteristic about yourself?
 I'm a introvert.

If you weren't here, where would you be?
Ideally, Antarctica.  Realistically, Socorro, New Mexico.

What is it you most want to share in your class?
A yoga practitioner's best yoga instructor is Herself.  Always.

 Credentials.

I obtained an H.B. a few years ago.  I find it the most relevant credential when teaching yoga.

Why yoga?

Yoga, to me, is the perfect package that exercises the body, mind, and spirit. I began yoga years ago for the physical benefits of strength and flexibility but I have stayed with it because of the joy and balance it brings to all aspects of my life. I also love that I can practice yoga any time and any where. I never travel without my yoga mat!

What's your favorite characteristic about yourself?

I'm a language learner. Feel free to ask me sometime about the languages I speak--or at least try to!

If you weren't here, where would you be?

At my parents' summer place on Clearwater Lake, Maine. The family dock is my favorite yoga studio in the world!

What is it you most want to share in your class?

I love Sally Kempton's quote: "The very heart of yoga practice is Abhyasa--steady effort in the direction you want to go." I want my students to feel and believe that it never matters if our bodies ever attain any particular physical shape, but it does matter that we keep breathing and moving into our practice.

Credentials.

I completed my 200-hour training with the Spring 2016 Adventure Club at Rubber Soul. I also have a 20-year practice under my belt giving me lots of yoga life-experience!

Why yoga?

Initially, I began taking yoga to expand the fitness classes I had been teaching as a certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor (following the golden rule of fitness specificity).  After taking yoga for a while, my students and fellow fitness enthusiasts started telling me they had noticed a significant change in my overall stature.  I then came to the realization that yoga was a transformative, essential fitness activity.  This revelation inspired me to seek out a succession of yoga workshops to build upon my established fitness background.  I have been a perpetual student of yoga ever since, and I remain committed to inspire others to understand the premise that the regular practice of yoga is a key element for maintaining a high quality of life.

Favorite Characteristic:

Well, my friends affectionately call me, “The Energizer Bunny”, so I guess that about says it all!

Convey in my class?

I aspire for my classes to be a fusion of soul and body enlightenment.  Each class begins with a conversation starter meant to awaken the soul, followed by a short informal group discussion. We then awaken our bodies with a blend of powerful strength flows and gentler stretching poses.  I want for each of my students to leave class feeling they have been both physically and soulfully challenged and ignited.

Credentials:

American Council on Exercise Certified Personal Trainer and Certified Group Fitness Instructor.  I have completed over 200 hours of various yoga workshops and have taught over 1000 yoga classes!

Why yoga?

I had been drawn to yoga (asana practice) throughout my early adult life, but I really fell in love with it after taking Chanda's class pretty regularly for a while, here at LIBY! She inspired me to become a teacher and, thanks to her and all I learned from Cal in Adventure Club, gain a deeper understanding of true yoga (sadhana practice).

Favorite characteristic of self:

I like to create art related to conservation, particularly marine mammals.

If not here, where?

A tropical island, preferably French Polynesia.

What I'd like to convey in my classes:

I prioritize including meditation in my classes, whether it's a few moments in a longer pose, or a guided meditation at the end.

Credentials:

I did Adventure Club with fellow teachers Raquel and Susan!

Why yoga?

Yoga helps me sift through the pain of existing as a human. Whether it be physical, mental, or spiritual pain, yoga helps integrate all mind, body, soul experiences as a whole. My daily practice helps me connect to myself, nature, and others.

What's your favorite characteristic about yourself?

I like listening to anyone and everyone's story! I am also happy to be in total quiet, solitude.

If you weren't here, where would you be?

I would love to be backpacking in any wilderness/mountainous area. In my wildest dreams, I'm climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro.

What is it you most want to share in your class?

Internal expansion as a result of playful movement and mindful breathing. Yoga exists beyond what you can see and you are your best guru to navigate the practice!

Credentials:

I have completed Rubber Soul's Adventure Club 200 hr Teacher Training twice and have 100s of hours of teaching and 1000s of hours of practice.

Michelle Carver - "Elle"

Why yoga?

This question really took a while for me to process. I've dedicated so much time and effort into yoga and never really thought about what motivates me to practice in the first place. Yoga is as natural to my life as breathing or sleeping. My spirit has guided me to practice, and I continue practicing to stay in touch with all aspects of my being. At the time when I first found yoga, I was very confused about my place in the world, and concerned about my purpose and meaning in life. Since practicing yoga, I haven't exactly found the answers to those questions, but i feel at peace with that. Yoga helps me cultivate acceptance in my life so I can hold space for myself and others.

What's your favorite characteristic about yourself?

I love inspiring others to laugh. The little bean inside me delights in joy.

If you weren't here, where would you be?

I'd be working at Grand Teton National Park. I left my job there to come back to Athens and focus on yoga.

What is it you most want to share in your class?

I want to share a piece of my peace. I want my students to feel at ease so that the innate joy of being can shine through them and radiate around the world!

Credentials:

Just completed the 200 hr RYT Adventure Club teacher training through Rubber Soul Yoga of Athens. Also to mention her personal years of practice.

Why yoga?

I found yoga through a friend while living in PA in 2000, and I enjoyed it.  But what kept me returning to it time and again was the practice not only changed my body, it changed my life.  I discovered I was able to cope better with the stresses of my life and became more connected with what was really important.  I learned to let go of the minutiae that was holding me down.

What is my favorite characteristic about me?

I love to cook and sharing my table with family and friends is one of my greatest pleasures.

If I weren't here, where would I be?

I would be living on a pristine river somewhere, with my children and grandchildren living just up the road.

What I'd like to most convey in my yoga classes?

I’d like everyone to experience the joy, energy, and transformation the practice of yoga offers, and I feel it is my job to try to promote these qualities.

Credentials:

I received my first 25hr certification in 2005 in Pittsburgh,PA through Yoga Fit.  Between 2006 and 2007 I became 200 hr Power Yoga certified in Tulum, Mexico through Amazing Yoga, a Baron Baptiste affiliate.  In 2012 I opened Eastern Shore Yoga studio in Easton, MD with 3 other yoga instructors.  Although I moved to NC in 2014, I am happy to say “ESY” is still going strong.

My sense of humor!

If I weren't here, where would I be?

Greece for sure!

Dana Skelton

Why yoga?

I was first introduced to yoga when I was running long distances and wanted to simply stretch.  I returned to it after several years as I was looking for a gentle way to care for my body and mind as I grow older.  I love the range of possibilities that yoga offers and that it can be as gentle or challenging to the mind and body as needed on any day. The most transformational aspects of yoga for me have been through the practice of learning to observe my own mind and becoming present in the moment. Seeing the work that I do on my mat eventually manifest in my day to day life has me a true believer in the power of yoga, and I want to share this practice with others.

What is my favorite characteristic about me?

I find daily inspiration in nature. I love being outside, walking trails and watching wildlife. I adore my 2 cats and will tell you all about them.

If I weren't here, where would I be?

Walking in the woods.

What I'd like to most convey in my yoga classes?

I offer a mindful vinyasa flow class accessible for all levels. I seek to foster self care, presence, awareness and deep connection through gentle yoga sequences.  I share the ways I bring yoga off the mat and into my own life and hope to inspire health of body, peace in mind and reverence for life.

Credentials:

I completed my 200 hour teacher training at Five Points Yoga in January 2018.
